The strange world of haunted objects

Every other category of haunting has some kind of internal logic. Haunted objects said "no" to all of that and just went feral.

Take the famous ones. There's a doll that's supposedly cursed and living in a glass box in a museum, and its whole deal is apparently that it moves slightly when nobody's looking, which, sure, that's also just what happens when a building settles, but go off. There's a "haunted" painting where the eyes supposedly follow you, a claim that has been made about roughly nine thousand different paintings throughout history, because eyes on a flat surface do that. It's called perspective. It's not a ghost, it's geometry.

Then you get into the genuinely funny tier: haunted Ikea furniture, haunted vending machines, a haunted Fitbit that allegedly kept tracking steps after its owner died. At some point the bar for "haunted object" became "anything slightly weird happened near this thing once," and nobody has raised that bar since.

A spooky picture? Or just old?

The theory, when there is one, is usually that an object absorbs some kind of residual energy from a strong emotional event and holds onto it, sort of like the residual haunting idea but for furniture instead of hallways. Which, fine, I'll allow the theory. I will not allow a haunted spoon.
